75 for 75: Sulton Rogers

Today's 75 for 75 artwork is a carving by Sulton Rogers. A Mississippi artist, Rogers spent much of his adult life in Syracuse, NY, working for a chemical plant. Upon retirement, he was gifted a block of wood and carving tools, and he was able to focus on his carvings full time after moving back to Oxford, MS. Rogers is known for his vampires, devils, coffins, and other spooky characters!

Do you think this was carved out of one piece of wood or were different parts added on?

Do you find this devil character scary or funny? Name five other adjectives that could be used to describe this carving.

Across many other cultures there are different representations of evil or death. For example, the Greeks told myths of Hades, the god of the underworld. Research and find representations in other cultures.
