75 for 75: Panathenaic Amphora

Panathenaic amphora

This amphora from the 4th century B.C. shows two boxers and a referee. The goddess Athena is seen in the corner. Boxing was a popular sport in ancient Greece. This amphora would have been filled with olive oil and given as a prize for boxing in the Panathenaic games.

Classroom Activity: Draw an amphora depicting a modern sport popular in present day Greece.
