75 for 75: Ancient Griffin Coin

Ancient Griffin Coin

This Coin depicts the Griffin, seated with one paw raised with a small rooster below. It was minted sometime between 450- 430 B.C. in the ancient Greek city of Abdera which was located on the coast of Thrace. The silver coin is a tetradrachm, meaning it is worth four drachmae. This coin is from the David M. Robinson Memorial Collection which is the focus of a current reinstallation project to put more on display.

Classroom Prompt: What images do we mint on coins in our society? What are the significances of these images?
