The essential grooming kit for the ancient athlete consisted of the aryballos and the strigil, shown here from the David M. Robinson Collection.
The aryballos was a small oil flask with an attached wrist strap. An athlete would sprinkle oil from his flask onto his skin prior to exercise. Once his training was complete he then used the strigil, a long curved dull metal blade with handle, to scrape the oil and accumulated sand off of his skin.
