Before he became an artist, Calder spent time as an engineer, and part of ship’s crews. It was during one of these journeys while on a ship that he saw the sun and the moon, perfectly aligned on opposite horizons of the ocean. He would cite this on many occasions in his life, and some would even attribute the event as the inspiration for his career in art. His artistic life was as widely varied in its venues and projects as his young adulthood was. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13.5pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13.5pt;">His most famous works, large public sculptures that feature long curving wires attached to leaf shaped sheet metal that hung from ceilings. They were dubbed “mobiles” because they were designed to move with the air currents. The mobiles were constructed of wires and shaped sheet metal attached at the ends, and each one was balanced and free, open to turn and sway with any air current that moved through the space. His exploration of art also resulted in geometric paintings, political paintings and screen printings, tapestries, and set design for theater. In the image above, we see just like in his mobiles, he used shape and line to create balance on the canvas. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13.5pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13.5pt;">In today’s Virtual Open Studio, we are going to create our own wire sculptures inspired by Calder’s work! This week, we will be focusing on ancient Egypt. The first Egyptians were nomads (wanderers) who settled by the Nile River. The Nile River provided a source for crops and life in an area largely surrounded by deserts. The Egyptians were known for many unique historical developments such as pyramids and tombs. </div><div><br /></div><div>Cats were revered in the culture of Ancient Egypt as being very important creatures. Some very important cats were even mummified in the same was as pharaohs were. Scarabs were tokens shaped like a bug with engravings that were supposed to ward off evil spirits or protect the owner from harm! The Egyptians also developed a written language, known as hieroglyphics, in which over 700 symbols were used to express ideas. These symbols were carved into pyramids to tombs. </div><div><br /></div><div>Today, we will be making our very own scarab! Check out the full demo video below!</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/z41YOojENvM" width="320" youtube-src-id="z41YOojENvM"></iframe></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Materials:</div><div><br /></div><div>-Bar of Soap</div><div>-Carving Tool (plastic utensil, stylus)</div><div>-Brown washable paint</div><div>-A Paintbrush</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhM3YKazckQM9rjX_VIzLQRkCPX40ldqY8zPkQM-ZfuGEO01yGHeg2X39ZAm02wlGjowQVDxOCZ56IEbWtK0HzfOlAIraoJz_L74bxUw6_ACRcNDosbMGcHNx0ZPomt51irXAU_laTWrA-V/s405/main-qimg-20b68b72e89ac5ba08560d94e3304aaa.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="363" data-original-width="405" height="574" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhM3YKazckQM9rjX_VIzLQRkCPX40ldqY8zPkQM-ZfuGEO01yGHeg2X39ZAm02wlGjowQVDxOCZ56IEbWtK0HzfOlAIraoJz_L74bxUw6_ACRcNDosbMGcHNx0ZPomt51irXAU_laTWrA-V/w640-h574/main-qimg-20b68b72e89ac5ba08560d94e3304aaa.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div>UM Museumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16142699246391764528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5798072288643020937.post-62181421905010805232020-10-07T14:38:00.003-05:002020-10-07T14:38:36.634-05:00Pop Art Portraits<h1 style="text-align: center;"> Virtual Open Studio</h1><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-dvnIzYgnde7uvN49hFk2mjMDlJwgGJWcuqgVurWcFsTkNujhIw1rk2oiUeD1t9FMmKg8jqZtJz2sGsSB0O4iY4s_otp_KWB2HixOeY8mBvW1jX3_1ro4f2gcWq-G9UFZ9h2TeXzsA16x/s960/1-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-dvnIzYgnde7uvN49hFk2mjMDlJwgGJWcuqgVurWcFsTkNujhIw1rk2oiUeD1t9FMmKg8jqZtJz2sGsSB0O4iY4s_otp_KWB2HixOeY8mBvW1jX3_1ro4f2gcWq-G9UFZ9h2TeXzsA16x/s320/1-3.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div>In today's Virtual Open Studio, we will be creating Pop Art Portraits inspired by a work of Pop Art in the UM Museum's collection by Andy Warhol!</div><div><br /></div><div>Andy Warhol, born in Pittsburgh, PA, was one of the founders of the American Pop Art movement. It involves individually painting each leaf in multiple layers to create an explosion of color that immediately draws the eye. Hamblett is so well known for her oil paintings that many do not know: she also wanted to be a stained glass artist! Marty entered the art world through quilt making. Working in this manner, she was able to 'paint' without paint. She applied the same principles of quilting, piecing an assortment of scraps and materials together, to her mixed media collages, including a number of unique portraits.</div><div><br /></div><div>The artistic challenge she faced was visualizing the likeness of her subject in her mind's eye using string, feather, yarn, thread and snips of fabric, paper, leather, beads and any other material that would come in reach of her imagination.</div><div><br /></div><div>Check out the video below to see Marty Vinograd's trees in our <i>Seymour Lawrence Collection of American Art</i>. Robinson, a world renowned archeologist and teacher. </p><p style="text-align: center;">Dr. Robinson excavated these artifacts between 1928 and 1938 in the Greek city of Olynthos. Olynthos was destroyed by enemy action in 348 BCE, its population sold into slavery, and the houses and contents left undisturbed until excavators found the ruins. Olynthos is still primary source of knowledge of Greek town planning and domestic life in the classical period. These artifacts provide an incomparable insight into the life of ordinary people in a prosperous Greek town. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUp78baNleOHfzhN-aoF2_dHberqX9qahfw72hKjDtNPB4isiS0fO6lgI8sNQVIFStDbaGc-fLNlzWFc7GJbUecuA_XKmaKBar905EazGJ5aDFxMiFPI85RXgTpGEGVv0f322Dbh10HRXt/s2048/1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="980" data-original-width="2048" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUp78baNleOHfzhN-aoF2_dHberqX9qahfw72hKjDtNPB4isiS0fO6lgI8sNQVIFStDbaGc-fLNlzWFc7GJbUecuA_XKmaKBar905EazGJ5aDFxMiFPI85RXgTpGEGVv0f322Dbh10HRXt/w400-h191/1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Let's make a Mythological Creature Shield!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GJg0XQPlF8w" width="320" youtube-src-id="GJg0XQPlF8w"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Materials:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">1. She later won a student show with her portrait of Golda Meir, which was purchased by an Israeli bank in D.C. and led to a commission for portraits of all of the Israeli prime ministers for the bank’s boardroom. Vinograd has shown all over the world with exhibitions in France, Costa Rica, New York, and New Orleans, and many others. Vinograd made her art and her home in Oxford, Mississippi.<br /></span></span><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The artist recalls, “Images of quilt making were imprinted in my nervous system – cutting, fitting, and pinning to see if it’s right, before gluing down… In some instances I cut without looking. I move to the art piece and glue instantly, and it is ‘right.’ So inside my head, the image arises to claim its own.”<br /></span></span><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Working in this manner, she was able to ‘paint’ without paint. The artistic challenge she faced was visualizing the likeness of her subject in her mind’s eye using string, feather, yarn, thread and snips of fabric, paper, leather, beads and any other material that would come in reach of her imagination. Occasionally, the artist would incorporate the subject’s clothes, photos or memorabilia.</span></span></p></div></h3><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: center;">Inspired by Marty text-align: center;"><i><br /></i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Born in 1900 in Lafayette, Alabama, Sister Gertrude Morgan, was a self-taught African American musician, preacher, poet, and folk artist. Raised as an active member of the Southern Baptist Church, it is no surprise that religion plays a central role throughout her life and is at the very core of her art. Morgan moved to New Orleans in the late 1930s to further spread His word through prayer and song. It was here that she adopted the title "Sister" after becoming associated with two other street missionaries. It was at age 56 that she received two new divine revelations--one instructing her to paint, and another telling her that she was the chosen Bride of Christ.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Morgan's body of work combines mediums such as acrylic paint, watercolor, wax crayons, ballpoint pens, etc. on anything from paper fans to cardboard window shades--essentially, whatever was readily available when the "spirit" moved her. Her paintings and painted objects depict Biblical scenes of heaven, hell, and New Jerusalem, as well as apocalyptic scenes from the Book of Revelations in a colorful, almost child-like manner, As Morgan's work gained momentum and notoriety in the art world, she implored others to "give all that fame to some other artist," because before anything, she was a missionary of Christ. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Check out Sister Gertrude Morgan's work of art from the UM Museum's collection above: <i>The Beast From the Sea</i>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Practice Close-Looking:</b> Get your kiddos talking about this piece of art! Challenge your child to examine <i>The Beast From the Sea </i>for a full minute without talking. After a minute ask these questions and have your child describe their answers in full detail:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">What do we see?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">What more can we find?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">What do we think is happening?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">How does this piece make us feel?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">What do we want to know?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Visual Arts Project:</b> Create a Creature of the Sea </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">1. As a folk artist, Sister Gertrude Morgan would create art on anything she could get her hands on.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">2. First, find your canvas! Be creative and think outside of the box. You can use a piece of cardboard, an old book, the back side of a cereal box, anything!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVuvFpMMAFKtxveGhmr3EgmHKrjgRHWfo9SPBbEtyAZaO05fU9LuTDEJfHOGEOT7methlnb5Jp2HKYS7oBKaduZDL4uNf8Ky7acXjUjPr5FMhyphenhyphenvrN3zb6dIKLYoXwHFt8Jtxkk_1gcD_QF/s1280/thumbnail_IMG_6317.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVuvFpMMAFKtxveGhmr3EgmHKrjgRHWfo9SPBbEtyAZaO05fU9LuTDEJfHOGEOT7methlnb5Jp2HKYS7oBKaduZDL4uNf8Ky7acXjUjPr5FMhyphenhyphenvrN3zb6dIKLYoXwHFt8Jtxkk_1gcD_QF/s320/thumbnail_IMG_6317.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">3. Next, find your medium. Like Morgan, she would use anything she had available. Paint, markers, crayons, whatever you have around your home! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghMkWJXJEUo9ARs0K4bkPiQ90NlUEPlfcDzi0DOdSH9TiVD8Ca74r4HC0UdlR6Kz1_8D15YlaqMUVuvEUMIXDOEQrqsbXDrUyHWJJMVWDOEFQIH4yV_jdYqSesuUeQENbVnv25QKVvZWpu/s1280/thumbnail_IMG_6326.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghMkWJXJEUo9ARs0K4bkPiQ90NlUEPlfcDzi0DOdSH9TiVD8Ca74r4HC0UdlR6Kz1_8D15YlaqMUVuvEUMIXDOEQrqsbXDrUyHWJJMVWDOEFQIH4yV_jdYqSesuUeQENbVnv25QKVvZWpu/s320/thumbnail_IMG_6326.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">4. Now it is time to sketch your design. Inspired by Sister Gertrude Morgan's <i>The Beast from the Sea</i>, design your own sea creature. Use your imagination! Will your creature have legs? Fins? Horns? A big tongue?! Using a pencil draw your creature on your canvas.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHQhI14QGKZI5uz7UJzRKJt70tQHhjRCGqGN8rU-8dQsMxsz7gi-28lIe5DP-SpZXtmHAve0-L7qnY3odKt_YL13sRtjSRfFbjGx0gf1Gvdvoumh1UVDBD-q9vVOruQU_im-Lkm4CoitGO/s1280/thumbnail_IMG_6323.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHQhI14QGKZI5uz7UJzRKJt70tQHhjRCGqGN8rU-8dQsMxsz7gi-28lIe5DP-SpZXtmHAve0-L7qnY3odKt_YL13sRtjSRfFbjGx0gf1Gvdvoumh1UVDBD-q9vVOruQU_im-Lkm4CoitGO/s320/thumbnail_IMG_6323.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">5. <br />
L.V Hull was a self taught folk artist from McAdams, Mississippi. Hull would paint on anything she could find, once saying how frustrated it made her to see garbage trucks pass by her home with perfectly good raw materials for her art scattered through their cargos. L.V Hull often got her inspiration from people who would visit her by studying them and analyzing their personalities. Look for colors, patterns, and different materials in her art!<br />
<br />
Hull would often display her art in her front lawn so those who would drive by would see her works. <i>"My best advice is on my mailbox: "Mind your own business. Thank you.""</i> -L.V Hull<br />

Most well known for his alteration of </span><span style="font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">existing media--such as old books, maps, record albums, and cassette tapes--to create new, transformed works </span><span style="font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">of visual fine art. </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">A large body of Dettmer's current work is created by altering </span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Books" style="text-decoration-line: none;"><span style="background-color: white; color: black; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">books</span></a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">, including older </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">dictionaries, encyclopedias, textbooks, science and engineering books, art books, medical guides, history </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">books, atlases, comic books, wallpaper sample books, and others. Dettmer seals and cuts into the books, </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">exposing select images and text to create intricate three-dimensional </span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derivative_works" style="text-decoration-line: none;"><span style="background-color: white; color: black; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">derivative works</span></a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> that reveal new or </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">alternative interpretations of the books. Dettmer never inserts or moves any of the books' contents. This </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">process is performed without pre-planning or mapping out the contents before cutting into the book. As he </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">cuts away unwanted material with knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Dettmer stabilizes the remaining paper </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">with a varnish. </span></div>

Dettmer has </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: cambria, serif; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">also constructed larger sculptures using complete sets of encyclopedias and other reference books.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Monday Museum Mysteries are back! Today, we are talking about a famous female artist from the 20th century. She was born in 1887 in Wisconsin and began going to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1905. She then went to school in New York. She did not enjoy school because she felt like it confined her style of art. She dropped out of school and became a commercial illustrator and then taught at different colleges in the U.S. </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Do you know who she is?</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">She was introduced to the work of Arthur Wesley Dow, who played a significant roll in helping our mystery artist develop her own style. After her introduction to Dow, her works became increasingly abstract. The museum has her piece <i>Abstraction of Lake George</i> on permanent display in the Seymour Lawrence Collection of American Art. </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Who do you think our mystery artist is?</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Our mystery artist fell in love with art dealer and photographer Alfred Stieglitz, and the two got married in 1924. A few years later, she began to spend lots of time in New Mexico, and after her husband died, she moved permanently to New Mexico. She lived to be 98 years old, and on November 15th, it was her 130th birthday! </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Who do you think this amazing artist was?</span><br />

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Our mystery artist is Georgia O'Keeffe. Her works are shown all over the United States, and she has her own museum in Sante Fe, New Mexico. In 2014, one of her flower painting sold for about 44.4 million dollars, which is more than 3 times what any other female artists' work has auctioned for. She is an incredible artist, and the University Museum is very lucky to have one of her works on display.</span></div>
