June 2020 Museum Happenings

It is with a heavy heart, we at the University of Mississippi Museum, mourn the senseless and horrific killing of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer while three other officers stood by. His death, along with countless other Black people, serve as painful reminders of the racial injustice that continues to impact communities throughout our country and the world.

Racial violence and discrimination is intolerable. We must redouble our efforts as a community to bring about meaningful change. Not just in times of adversity, but every single day. As educators, we must stand up for social justice and equity, embrace diversity, and inspire others to address injustice and insensitivity toward people of color and all learners.

We cannot change the prejudice of the past, but we can determine the future. Now, more than ever, the Golden Rule- treating others with the same respect we would want for ourselves- must guide us forward. Explore this blog to find activities inspired by black artists in our collection. It is with art we can enlighten, empower, educate, bring change - with it we can learn empathy, compassion, and love. Together we can make a profound and lasting difference in the lives of our children.
